Whew! When it comes to the world of Elton John–not to mention Bernie Taupin–it’s been busier than ever.
As you know, today is Elton’s birthday, but there have been other celebrations in the past week.
Global, which owns Heart, Capital, Smooth, and other UK radio stations, has handed out this year’s awards, with our man winning for Global Legend.

In 2022, Elton got their Mass Appeal trophy.

On Wednesday night, a concert at Washington, DC’s DAR Constitution Hall honouring Gershwin Prize winners Elton and Bernie (to be televised by PBS in April) was attended by politicians from both sides of the aisle. Performances included Elton on Your Song, Metallica’s version of Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, and Annie Lennox‘s cover of Border Song.
Charlie Puth, whose selection was Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, also took the stage the night before, at a dinner for Elton and Bernie.
Brandi Carlile sang Madman Across the Water, and teamed up with Annie and Joni Mitchell for I’m Still Standing. She admitted it was difficult to narrow down her choices, as so many of Elton and Bernie’s compositions are significant.
Garth Brooks went with a couple of numbers as well: Daniel and Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.
Elton observed that many of his musical heroes are from the U.S. He also spoke about Bernie. Without his lyrics, Elton thinks he’d be working in a record store, or possibly a place like Walmart or McDonald’s. On a personal level, Elton says they are closer now than when they first started out. Although both went ”through hell,” the songwriters are happy now.
Bernie said he has lived in the States for decades, and has an American wife and family. He concludes that both his heart and soul are American.
Bernie had another big event over the weekend. He was among the exhibitors at an art fair in West Palm Beach, Florida, Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary. The pieces, based on sixties images shot by Terry O’Neill, were previously at Iconic Images in London, England, and attracted famous faces like Elton and Pete Townshend. Perhaps that’s what started a rumour, reported in Ocula magazine, that Elton would be ”on the grounds” of the art fair!
This summer, Bernie is to be a special guest at his friend Rodney J Crowell‘s songwriting workshop in Idyllwild, California. It is scheduled to run from the 12th through 16th of August, with specifics yet to be announced (though a 4 p.m. Q&A with Taupin would be part of ”a typical day”).

When he was at the 2018 edition of Adventures in Songwriting, another attendee, Brennen Leigh, serenaded Bernie with her rendition of Rocket Man.
A production with songs by two rock stars will play New York’s Broadway this fall. Elton and Jake Shears‘ Tammy Faye musical is headed for the Palace Theatre, with previews to start on the 19th of October, and tickets to go on sale in a couple of days. The official opening is 14 November. Katie Brayben , who won an Olivier award for Best Actress in a Musical, will reprise her UK performance, as will Andrew Rannells, who portrayed Tammy’s husband, Jim Bakker.

Sir Elton himself is part of a cast–he is in the sequel to This is Spinal Tap. He’s just wrapped up filming, and according to Showbiz 411, he is featured on the song Stonehedge.
Elton’s relationship with Gucci is apparently stone-cold.The reason, a source told the Mirror, is because of Alessandro Michele‘s departure.
Elton was very close to the creative director, who left Gucci in 2022. His exuberance reminded him of his late friend, Gianni Versace.
In 2016, the performer presented Michele with the designer award at the GQ Men of the Year awards in London, England. Elton said he was happy to honour ”the man who put beauty back into Gucci.”

Michele created Elton’s outfits for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, and reinterpreted Bob Mackie, Annie Reavey, and Mr Freedom‘s designs for Gucci‘s Spring/Summer 2018 collection.
At the latest Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, Elton and David Furnish wore Versace suits.
