Elton John: Icon is a new photography book that will be out this fall. It includes album covers and candid moments, and contains stories from Gered Mankowitz, Jimmy Steinfeldt, and other photographers.
Jimmy’s own book, Rock ‘N Roll Lens, with subjects ranging from Michael Jackson to Elton, was published in 2012. He told ej.w that he is a songwriter as well–and has been influenced by Elton. Last year, Jimmy attended Rodney Crowell‘s songwriting camp, where he got to spend time with Rodney’s friend, Bernie Taupin.
Other ”Icon” contributors are Amalie R. Rothschild, who worked at New York City’s Fillmore East, Val Wilmer, known for taking photos of the musician when he was still Reg Dwight, and Patrick Harbron, whose images were shot during the Jump Up and Breaking Heart tours. Patrick says there’s also one from the 2018 Grammys.
The cover, featuring Elton in a Nudie Cohn suit, is Terry O’Neill‘s. Incidentally, Elton turned to Terry’s portfolio when selecting a cover for his autobiography, Me.
