Town of Plenty

The latest Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party raised over nine million dollars and attracted names like Brooke Shields, Maren Morris, Donatella Versace, and Smokey Robinson. Elton, who wore a burgundy suit with crystal embellishments as well as heart-shaped glasses, sang Chosen-Family with guest performer Rina Sawayama.

An exclusive ”Spotlight” frame from his eyewear line with Walmart was given to dinner guests. Last year, the elton-john-aids-foundation Oscar party attendees were treated to ”Gold Dust” frames from this line of eyewear.

Elton spoke to People magazine on the red carpet of his gala. He mentioned Dua Lipa, noting that his Cold Heart (Pnau Remix) collaborator didn’t need much advice because she’s so ”smart and grounded.”

Smokey, meanwhile, told the Mirror that he would love to join Elton at Glastonbury in June, if asked. But he isn’t sure this will indeed be Elton’s last show, since he has ”retired five times” already.

The night after the EJAF benefit, Elton and David Furnish were at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California, celebrating the success of Disney+‘s livestreamed Dodger Stadium special in November. There were as many as 28 cameras when he performed, but Elton didn’t notice. He praised filmmakers for keeping ”a low profile” and allowing him to focus on the audience. Elton believes he never played or sang so well for so long.

The event, which included a condensed version of Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, was held for Television Academy members . . . who were reminded that Elton has yet to win an Emmy, but does have Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. So he’s almost an ”EGOT.”

The Recording-Academy has announced that Elton and Bruce Springsteen will make special appearances when CBS and Paramount+ broadcast A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys on 9 April. They are not singing, but lots of others are. They include Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlile, John Legend, Fall Out Boy, Mumford & Sons, and LeAnn Rimes.

Do you remember when LeAnn teamed up with Elton for Written In The Stars? It was part of the Aida concept album, released this week in 1999 (23 March, to be precise).

There was another anniversary on the 17th of March. On this date in 1995, the Made in England album was released. Believe was one of the stronger tracks, but we think most of them were.

Elton will soon be back onstage. He’s to play the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England, on the 23rd and 24th of March. These will be his first European engagements of 2023. However, Elton is already thinking of spending a two-month vacation with his family, according to the Sun. After that, he’d like to go into the recording studio, but hasn’t decided yet who else will be involved. We’re hoping it’s Bernie Taupin. Last year, David Furnish said that Elton had received some great lyrics from his songwriting partner, but had been too busy to get to them.

We would also like to hear more of Elton’s collaborations with Pnau, being fond of the 2012 Good-Morning-to-the-Night album (particularly the title track) as well as the recent Cold Heart hit.

There are plenty of tunes to choose from, at least a dozen!

Before that, though, Elton-John and Dolly Parton have reportedly joined forces for a new version of Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me. It’s to appear on Dolly’s album of rock songs later this year.

As you know, Elton turns 76 on Saturday. So our podcast will have a special guest to celebrate. The Elton Blog won’t spill the beans, but this person played a vital role in Elton’s career in the seventies and eighties, and shared his thoughts with this website some years back. Meanwhile, we want to wish Elton a very happy birthday, and many more to come!
