“All the girls are doing it. It’s just wonderful to see the feminine side take over from the masculine side and make all the good music,” were Elton’s words to singer Laufey, who appeared on a recent episode of Rocket Hour, on Apple Music.
Elton is known for expressing admiration for and inspiring young music artists, particularly young, female artists. On this International Women’s Day, let’s look at just some of the young women making music who Elton has recently highlighted.
It would be quite difficult to mention female artists and Elton, without mentioning Dua Lipa. Elton has expressed admiration for Dua’s second album, Future Nostalgia, released in 2020, and what was arguably one of the most significant moments between the friends was when they released the song, “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” in 2021. The song combines four of Elton’s songs into one, and the two performed the song together at Dodger Stadium in 2022. In an interview with Sirius XM, Elton discussed getting to know Dua and the creation of the song. Dua has recently released new singles and has been discussing her upcoming third album.
Rina Sawayama is another name who Elton has both expressed admiration for and has collaborated with. Elton has discussed his admiration for Rina’s music, one of which in particular being her debut album, Sawayama, released in 2020. The two collaborated on the song, “Chosen Family.” In an interview with Sirius XM, Rina discussed working on the song with Elton. Rina and Elton have also performed live together, with one of the most recent performances being at Glastonbury 2023, when the two duetted on “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”
“I keep saying this: The girls are killing it,” is what Elton said to the British band, The Last Dinner Party, when he had them as his guest on a 2023 episode of Rocket Hour. On the episode, the band discussed their track, “My Lady of Mercy” and Elton expressed interest in going to see them perform live. The powerful-sounding band is definitely one that is growing in popularity, and they have just released their debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy in early February of 2024.
To close out the selection is Laufey, who as mentioned earlier, also recently appeared as a guest on Rocket Hour. Something that both Elton and Laufey share in common is having a classical background in music, which can be heard in their individual work. Laufey brings an interesting style to her music, as she incorporates her classical background as well as jazz, in her work. In 2023, Laufey released her second album, Bewitched, and will be releasing an expanded version of the album in April 2024.
To reiterate Elton’s own words, it certainly does appear that all the girls are doing it.
