The Surrey Live website didn’t hold back reporting on how viewers of Elton John and Brandi Carlile’s London Palladium gig reacted negatively within minutes of the broadast opening.

Many viewers went to social media to say they had never heard of Brandi. They had hoped to see Elton on stage.

One critical tweet read: “This #EltonJohn thing on #ITV is an absolute car crash.”

Other viewers were more charitable saying: “Brandie’s voice is stunning. Love this. Love the album.”

A few days earlier, the same publication ran an item in which Elton John updated fans on his health ahead of his ITV concert special. The renowned musician was set to headline An Evening with Elton John and Brandi Carlile, a show that would feature performances from both artists and zoom into their friendship.

On 17 April episode of Good Morning Britain, a pre-recorded interview with Elton and Brandi was broadcast, during which they discussed the filming of the TV special.

Elton, aged 78, confessed that he had not been “feeling very well” before stepping onto the stage and also opened up about the “fear” and “doubt” he had felt regarding the ITV programme.

“But, in the end, the anxiety pushed the energy forward. I don’t walk away and let people down,” he told the breakfast TV show.
