The world premiere is almost here! We’re talking, of course, about Never Too Late, the new Elton John documentary.

As of this writing, Never Too Late will be shown at three film festivals. The first is on Friday in Toronto, Canada. The September 6th presentation is set for 9:30 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall. It will be seen two more times at the Toronto International Film Festival–on 7 September and 13 September, in the afternoon, at Scotiabank Theatre. While all sold out, a few more tickets have since been released.

Then it’s the New York Film Festival‘s turn at 6 p.m. on 1 October, at Lincoln Center‘s Alice Tully Hall–followed by the 10 October European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. Tickets for the general public go on sale on 17 September, both for New York and London. However, limited VIP tickets for the former are already available. As for the Royal Festival Hall showcase in London, England, BFI Patrons get priority booking on 9 September, while BFI Members can purchase tickets a day later. Extra tickets for select screenings–which may or may not include Never Too Late–become available on the third of October.

And that’s not all. On 15 November, the doc gets a limited theatrical run in the United Kingdom and America. The latter includes AMC Theatres. A month later, on the 13th of December, Disney Plus will offer the movie, along with a new original song–perhaps from Elton and Bernie Taupin’s forthcoming album?

More is known about Elton and Jake Shears‘ Tammy Faye musical. As previously announced, Katie Brayben has been cast in the title role, while Christian Borle plays Jim Bakker and Michael Cerveris has the part of Jerry Falwell. The full cast has now been named, and the actors include Autumn Hurlbert as the Tammy Faye Bakker alternate; Mark Evans as Billy Graham; Andy Taylor as Pat Robertson/Ted TurnerIan Lassiter as Jimmy Swaggart/Ronald Reagan/Archbishop; and Alana Pollard as Jessica Hahn. Previews begin at New York City’s Palace Theatre on 19 October, ahead of its 14 November opening.

From the Palace to Paris, France, where the 2024 Olympics have ended–but not the admiration for a couple of athletes from Elton’s Rocket Sports Management company.

Cyclist Josie Knight and her team secured the bronze medal in the Women’s Team Pursuit against Italy. And in gymnastics, Joe Fraser finished in fifth place in the Individual All-Around and fourth in the Team All-Around.

Elton doesn’t play a lot of sports, but he is fond of his track suits and Adidas footwear. In fact, Elton and his husband received personalised trainers earlier this year. Starline Customs‘ Karl Chester got his ideas from the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album cover; Elton’s 1975 Dodger Stadium engagement; old snapshots of the former Reg Dwight; Elton’s 1999 appearance on TV’s animated series, The Simpsons; and a rocket blasting off. The artist usually does a lot of tracing and sketching. With Elton, though, Karl didn’t worry about mistakes, and found that the work ”just flowed, like  automatic writing.”

In 2017, Elton received a pair of sneakers specially made by Nike. The silver Air Force 1 ”Jet’‘ shoes (no connection to Bennie And The Jets) were inspired by a knight’s armour and disco ball. The gift was to thank Elton for his long-standing relationship with the company and for his commitment to diversity and inclusion.

All of this brings to mind the 2013 auction of celebrity-designed Stan Smith Adidas to benefit the LGBTQ+ human rights foundation Stonewall. Elton provided his initials, along with a floral pattern and zebra stripes. Boy George, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Kylie Minogue were a few other participants.

When it comes to Elton’s singing style, Neil Barrett can offer insights. He’s a speech therapist–not to mention the man behind the I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Elton John podcast, and was recently Radio Elton John World‘s guest.

And ej.w readers can soon expect a new Special. Here’s a hint . . . ”Mail!”
