Last year, the highly anticipated sequel to Spinal Tap was released, as was the soundtrack album featuring Elton on a couple of tracks, Stonehenge and Listen to the Flower People.
But back in 2004, Elton told Daily Variety about an ”upmarket Spinal Tap.” The TV show would have been based on ”male divas” such as Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger–and possibly Elton himself. In fact, Elton told Larry King that he might appear on Him and Us as a friend of the rock star once in a while.
Writer/producer Cindy Chupack said it was one of many pilots she filmed which never aired, although she considered it a great experience.
Here are more projects which didn’t pan out–or even get off the ground.
• Movies.
In 2012, Rocket Pictures was planning an animated movie, based on Michael Buckley‘s best-selling series, Nerds. Two years later, Elton was eyeing Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
More recently, Andrew brought up another possible venture. He said he ”might ask” Elton to appear as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar.
• Music.
In 2020, Elton’s voice gave out, so he wasn’t able to finish a concert in Auckland, New Zealand. It’s surprising the performer came onstage in the first place, since he had walking pneumonia.
George Michael‘s Trojan Souls. The Wham! vocalist came up with the idea in the early nineties to team up with the likes of Elton, Seal, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, and Sade. Likewise, a documentary about the making of the album has not been released.
Madonna. Elton and the Material Girl made up after years of public feuding. They even said they wanted to work together, but have yet to follow up.
Another ‘Madonna’ is making news, however. A Blessed Madonna extended mix will be released on Record Store Day, which falls on the 18th of April. This is a different version of Elton and Dua Lipa‘s smash hit, Cold Heart, and part of Positiva Presents: Elton John – The Remixes, pressed on glow in the dark vinyl.
