The One Who WritesThe Words
The Elton Blog had been wondering when Bernie Taupin‘s next art exhibition would be held. So it was surprising–and nice–to learn of other developments.
Bernie will be releasing a solo album in October. And he’s in a couple of upcoming documentaries: his own (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DadnXOqvrxG) and one about Lefty Frizzell (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPMpA09Epei), in which Bernie says he became obsessed with the ups and downs of the country singer’s career.
It got the Elton Blog thinking about some special BT lyrics. . . .
- Grimsby. ”The shingle beach did ring” description is especially nice, although it can’t be taken literally. Tom Weston, AKA YoungElton, is from the area and told EJ.W there ”isn’t really a shingle beach; the pier is in Cleethorpes (not Grimsby); there is no Skinners Arms (but a Smokers Arms); and pies and peas aren’t a noteworthy local dish (we are known for our fish and chips).”
The tribute artist recently did a rare hometown gig, where he covered the song. He loves Grimsby because ”it’s tongue in cheek and a quirky one to perform.”
- Come Down in Time: The line about two birds singing out of tune is funny. Yet it’s poetic and poignant as well, with references to the half-light left by the moon as the protagonist wonders if his love is serious about meeting him.
- Rocket Man. ”I’m not the man they think I am at home” stands out, as does another confession many can relate to: not understanding ”the science.”
- Rotten Peaches. Bernie talks about forgetting rotten peaches and the places they’ve stayed. Yet he continues to bring up the spoiled fruit throughout the song!
- Turn The Lights Out When You Leave. There are no rotten peaches on this Peachtree Road track, particularly in the case of ”so if everything’s been said, I’m heading back to bed” and comparing a relationship that’s on the rocks to worn-out clothes.
- Writing. The early days of Elton and Bernie’s partnership are suggested by ”navigation of our new-found craft.” A clever line since ”craft” can also refer to a boat. And it’s hard not to smile and nod when Bernie wonders if they will still be writing in approaching years.
Of course there are loads more, but EJ.W would enjoy hearing from you. Contact-us and share your thoughts.
