Elton John played to the 2,000 guests at Wembley Stadium’s farewell concert party on November 2, 2000, and was joined by Chris De Burgh, Jools Holland and Lesley Garrett who sang the traditional FA Cup Final anthem Abide With Me.
After a rainy start to the day, the evening improved with clear skies in time for the 8 pm “kick-off”. On the night, Elton commented: “All the greatest footballers have played here. It is sad, very sad, that it is going. It has had so many send-offs but this is the last one. I am glad to be here on the last night.”
The stadium was built in 1923 and has also housed many great rock shows including the 1985 Live Aid concert.
The 60-year-old Brazilian football star Pele, who never played at the stadium but has called it “the church of football”, put the ball past Gordon Banks and into the back of the net to start a spectacular fireworks display to say goodbye to the Twin Towers.
Banks was joined at the AXA Final Ball event by other members of the 1966 World Cup winning team as well as Frank Bruno and Olympics gold medallist Steve Redgrave.
The bulldozers are expected to arrive in the next few weeks.
