When Cindy Bullens heard that Elton was throwing a party in the seventies at a Los Angeles studio she was familiar with, she decided to crash the party.

He actually walked up to me and introduced himself to me, Bullens told the Tribune. And a few minutes later, a woman walked up and said, What do you do? And I said, Im a singer. And she walked away, came back a few minutes later and said, What are you doing the next two months?

It seemed almost too easy. But two days later Cindy was rehearsing with Elton, and shortly after she was on the road.

We did Dodger Stadium, Bullens recalled. We did many stadiums, actually. We did Madison Square Garden six nights in a row. The Metrodome, the Astrodome.

More than 30 years later, Bullens is doing much smaller gigs with her group, the Refugees. But while Cindy thinks she was born to perform, she doesnt regret not having huge crowds.

I wasnt seeking to be a background vocalist, she said. I always thought I was going to be a solo artist with my own band. But when the opportunity was presented to me and Elton asked me if I wanted to go on the road I said yes. And, of course, I learned a great deal and had a ball. But then it was time to do my own thing.
