A One-of-a-Kind Assignment For an Artist Who Has Already Worked With Some Big Names

An estimated two billion Queen’s Diamond Jubilee TV viewers will tune in to see artist Ann Carrington‘s banner aboard the Royal Barge leading the Thames procession.

The velvet flag measuring about ten feet square was made in her Margate studio and contains half a million gold buttons attached by more than a mile of metallic thread.

The 50-year-old, who has produced pieces for Elton and Gwyneth Paltrow, says it will be like a floating art gallery.

She adds:

“The BBC are anticipating their biggest TV audience ever, even bigger than the Royal Wedding.”

The banner depicts the Royal Coat of Arms with a twist, the traditional shield replaced by the Coronation crown in honour of Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne.

The artist needed official permission to change the coat of arms before setting to work with six assistants sewing £15,000-worth of Chinese buttons. She says there were just some minor changes that were proposed.
