Ben Stiller was recently asked if Elton really was writing a musical for him about a fellow with AIDS.
He replied, ”Yes and no. A friend of mine has been working on the script for a long time. Its about a Broadway theatre director and Elton is writing the music for it. Its really funny. Its been fun to have an excuse to call up Elton John and talk about stuff. Surreal.”
Asked if he has met the piano player before, Stiller said, ”A few times. Im a huge Elton John fan. His music has meant a lot to me through the years so to have conversations with him about something were working on and pretending thats normal is always fun. Im very starstruck around him because I think hes such a genius.”
”Hes a really nice, warm, self-effacing guy. But often people who have got to that level of talent and success are incredibly cool and humble. I havent got to that level of talent and success yet. But when Im talking to Elton, I realise the creative process is what its all about for him. Youve got to love doing what you do and not get caught up in the results of it, as hard as it is to stay away from that. You have to do it for the joy of doing it and not worry about box office success. Youve got to do it because you want to.”
