The Times has announced that the Fenton Play Production Company‘s (PPC) Ticking, in which students face factors that lead to school violence, draws its title from Elton’s old song.

The play opens today at Fenton High School’s Blackbox studio theatre in Michigan.

Written by students and directed by Lori Thompson, PPC director, it primarily addresses bullying and the tragic consequences it sometimes helps foster.

The subject matter, according to Thompson, came about when she was at a conference in Oklahoma City, where the city’s 1995 terrorist bombing was discussed.

How pupils deal with bullying, divorce, single-parent households and broken families inspired the stories within the play, Thompson explained.

“The PPC researched shootings in Jonesboro, Ark., Columbine and Virginia Tech,” she said. From that, she said students improvised scenarios, which transformed into a performance of vignettes last year that she said were very believable.

”A lot of students could relate to what’s happening,” she said.

The plot centers around two central characters, one male and one female. According to Thompson, it takes the audience through “a typical day of various confrontations of manipulation, degradation, and humiliation.” The audience also witnesses the disparate home lives of the two characters. One is from a wealthy, materialistic family and one is from a divorced, lower-income family.

The composition which that inspired the play’s name describes a model citizen turned violent killer. Lori noted that the title is appropriate for the play, which imagines a school shooting.

The performance provides various statistics about bullying and school violence, as well as ideas on how to improve our society, Thompson said. She credits the students for “doing their part to help create a healthy environment.”

Because of its initial success, Ticking is scheduled for six performances this year. Showtimes are this Friday and Saturday. Subsequent performances will follow on February 6, Feb. 7, May 29 and May 30. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m., and are open to the public, free of charge.

Seating is limited, the director said. She urges those interested to call (810) 591-2964 to reserve tickets. Due to the sensitive nature of the performance, it is not suitable for students 10 and under.
