Earlier this year, it was revealed that Rocket Pictures had acquired film rights to the New York Times best-selling series of books, NERDS, by writer Michael Buckley.

Elton’s company will develop the books as an animated family feature film.  Buckley will write the screenplay, and the movie will be produced by Rocket Pictures principals Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish.  Elton is to executive produce.

Nerds is an action-filled comedic property with a great inclusive message at its heart,” said Hamilton Shaw. ”We think it has huge potential as a dynamic and modern family movie.”

The critically acclaimed NERDS series follows a group of socially inept youngsters who run a spy network from inside their elementary school. Three books have been released in the past two years; the fourth and fifth titles will be published in Fall 2012 and Fall 2013 respectively.

Michael, who is also the author of the New York Times best-selling Sisters Grimm series, recently spoke about his collaboration with Elton. He said he hopes the rocker will permit some of his songs to be used.

You never know whats going to happen, but were all very excited, he also commented. I havent met Elton yet: they told me that if I want to meet him I could come out to Las Vegas and see his big show. I would totally do it – Ive always been a huge fan – but I told them I would come as long as I could have a pair of his glasses.
