Paul Weller made a surprise appearance at a memorial concert for late strings arranger Robert Kirby on Sunday.

As previously noted by this Web site, the musician, who died last year, helped put together orchestral arrangements for artists including Weller, Sir Elton and Elvis Costello.

The former Jam frontman showed his appreciation for Kirby’s work by taking to the stage at a benefit show in his honour, which was held in London over the weekend.

Weller performed With Time And Temperance from his 2000 album Heliocentric, which featured an arrangement by his late friend.

He told the audience, “He was a great man, we made great music together and fell off many barstools together!”
